Old names and new faces ring in 2008 XC season!
She is back! Seabury Hall junior Hailey Grossman made clear that no matter what happens in any other Maui Interscholastic League race, the Spartans' home meet is all hers.
Grossman finished first at the Seabury Hall cross country race for a third consecutive year on Saturday with a time of 20 minutes, 4 seconds on the hilly Seabury course, beating last weekend's winner, Bailey Massenburg of King Kekaulike by just over a minute. After taking the 2007 track season off for personal reasons, Grossman beat the two time defending state track champion Bailey Massenberg convincingly.
Over at Pearl City, more of the same, as Savannah Lowrie of Leilehua, I stand corrected, won a preseason race in a fine time of 19:43 beating last years XC state champ Kristin Ali Keith of Mililani, who ran a 19:57. Here is this week's revised top ten. As we get more times and results this list will change.
Sara Clapp 11 Kaiser
2. Savannah Lowrie 12 Leilehua
3. Hailey Grossman 11 Seabury Hall
4. Bailey Massenburg 12 King Kekaulike

Dear Anonymous,
Good job on updating your predictions. I am of the opinion that Mililani will win States this year and dominate for the next few years....the intermediate program at Mililani Middle school has really helped the program at the High School. It will be a much more competitive season for girls CC which will benefit all the competitors in bringing out the best in each runner.
Although I expect Mililani to do well at States, I think it is too soon to predict a State championship, a lot of things can happen between now and Oct. 31. We have to take into account that the changes in the Anonymous prediction from last week to this week was mostly based on the few available meet results so far this year, and the picture will change as more results and information are provided throughout the season. The first Anonymous prediction was influenced by the performances at last year's State Meet by returning athletes, as well as results from the track season, which provides a more comprehensive view of all of the potential of all of the athletes from the different leagues around the State.
Some things to consider are:
Seabury Hall returns all 5 of their Top 25 finishers at States.
State 3rd place team Iolani returns all of its runners.
Although State Champ Punahou graduated 3 of its top finishers, they are always deep with talent, and can not be counted out.
Defending OIA Champ, Leilehua, who was also the top OIA team at States, returns most of their top runners, and always finish the season strong.
There are many other schools who will also benefit from their Intermediate programs so the State picture will continue to change as more results become available.
It should prove to be an interesting and competitive season.
Julie Bresenbruch lives in Mililani but she goes to Maryknoll, and Kimberly Pugliese is also from Mililani but she went to Iolani last year, so the local high school does not necessarily benefit from the intermediate program.
Based on Kamehameha - Kapalama's performance this week, and their 4th place finish at States last year, I think they should be in the team rankings, even though they graduated 4 seniors from that team, they are another ILH school that has a lot of talent and depth.
